The new $70 million expansion project at Sandals Grande Antigua Resort & Spa opened July 15, 2007. The New portion, called Mediterranean Village, will complement the existing Caribbean Village and will feature 180 luxurious suites, a lobby with private check-in services, the largest freshwater pool in the eastern Caribbean, poolside cabanas with wireless Internet access and plasma-screen TV's, new meeting and banquet space and an expanded Red Lane Spa. The all-suite 5-star addition is situated on a west-facing hilltop overlooking the sea.

Already billed as the world's top honeymoon resort, Sandals Grande Antigua touts its new village as a sophisticated marriage of Mediterranean and Caribbean styles, targeting weddings, lovers and romance seekers.

Mediterranean Village suites feature neutral-toned king-size, mahogany four-poster beds. Plush, textured, custom bedding includes pineapple-embroidered Matelasse covers. Each suite offers one or two plasma TVs as well as bar units stocked with premium spirits. Bathrooms are designed with Italian Giallo marble, hand-painted domed ceilings, custom wall mosaics, his and her vanities, Jacuzzi tubs and separate showers.

The Village will include 11 Luxury Ocean Villa suites, which have a spacious bedroom, their own 12' by 12' foot swimming pools and an outdoor Jacuzzi, along with an interior Jacuzzi in the bathroom. Tow of the top six categories of suites offer Sandals' butler service. The butlers, trained by the Guild of Professional English Butlers, can unpack and pack luggage, draw rose-petal bubble baths and serve private meals in-suite or on a private terrace.

The Village will be topped off with a Sandals signature pool tower, a swim-up bar and the eastern Caribbean's largest whirlpool. And this appears to be only the beginning in a multiyear plan to upgrade Antiua.

Four new restaurants will be added to the existing five that are currently in the resort's Caribbean Village. The new restaurants include an Italian eatery with running fountains, skylights, custom murals and Italian millwork aimed to create a Mediterranean feel. A traditional English pub will serve authentic British cuisine, while a wood-fired brick oven pizzeria located off the piazza will serve up to 20 kinds of made-to-order pizza throughout the day.

Also, a 3,200 square-foot shopping area will be built as part of the expansion. It will include a specialty boutique, a Sandals gift store, a cigar, rum and spice store, a duty- free jewelry shop and a photography shop.

The Mediterranean Village will also have a one-of-a-kind art gallery, a first for the resort, featuring works from both local and international artists.
