Name Change Information

When and how to change your name after the wedding.

After marriage it's common for a bride to change her last name. Many couples proceed with the name change process as soon as they possibly can. If you are planning a honeymoon or trip outside the country, or any other trip that may require you to carry additional identification (such as a cruise), delay your name change activity until you return.

Investigate your state's policy on changing your name after marriage. Generally, if you wish to keep your name, you do nothing. If you do wish to take your husband's name, you must make the appropriate changes promptly.

Convenience wise, taking his name will make your life easier- especially if you have children. Another option is one or both partners may hyphenate their last names and have the benefits of retaining their last name as well as the benefits of taking their partner's name.

Be confident with whatever you decide and enjoy your new married status!
