Jamaica Luxury Resorts

Three Elegant Resort properties offer high-end accommodations and amenities.

It seems cliché to say that Jamaica has "something for everyone," but it comes close to the truth. Once dubbed "the biggest little island in the world," Jamaica caters to honeymooners, families and golfers. Its jade-colored waters beckon divers and snorkelers, while its lush green rainforests call to bikers and hikers.

There are also a number of properties available to suit these various types of travelers. Among them are three Elegant Resorts International, (www.elegantresortsint.net): the Jamaica Inn, the Round Hill Hotel & Villas and the Royal Plantation. These unique hotels offer a level of luxury designed to satisfy guests ranging from couples to families.

Each of the properties has recently completed renovations. All operate on a European Plan, in which taxes and service charges are included in the nightly rates.

Here is a brief summary of each of the three Elegant Resorts International properties in Jamaica:

Jamaica Inn: The Jamaica Inn, a periwinkle-colored, colonial-style hotel set in a private cove, was honored as "Jamaica's Leading Hotel" for the second consecutive year. Originally built in 1950, the 47-suite property caters to guests over age 12, and its private, relaxed environment makes it a perfect place for a romantic tryst.

The hotel offers a 700 foot-long, private lagoon beach, a swimming pool, water sports, yoga classes, a croquet lawn, a fitness center, a game room, nightly music and cocktail parties, a bar and an award winning al fresco restaurant. The Jamaica Inn's KiYara Spa is set on a bluff overlooking the sea. It features holistic and natural Jamaican herb treatments, which take place in oceanview, thatched-roof huts where guests can listen to the intoxicating sounds of crashing waves.

Accommodations, which completed renovations in October, are just as idyllic. Three are perfect for honeymooners: Cottages three and four, each measuring 1,100 square feet, are set on a bluff overlooking the ocean and feature extra-large marble bathrooms, infinity plunge pools, sunning terraces, exotic outdoor showers and exclusive beach access. The 1,996 square foot White Suite is situated on its own peninsula with a private pool, a beach entrance, a sunning terrace and a luxurious marble bathroom.

The property is located 10 minutes from downtown Ocho Rios, near the Ocho Rios cruise terminal and abundant shopping. It is also close to Dunn's River Falls, Prospect Estate, the Upton Golf & Country Club, Blue Mountain and the Drax Hall Polo Club.

Royal Plantation: Down the road from the Jamaica Inn sits the stately Royal Plantation, the only member of Leading Small Hotels of the World on the island. Honored as the "Caribbean's Leading Resort" at the 2006 World Travel Awards, the hotel is set on eight beachfront acres, providing each of its 74 accommodations with an ocean view. No one under 18 is permitted at the hotel, making it ideal for couples seeking a romantic getaway. Couples often cozy up on lounges at the centrally located pool and whirlpool gazebo. Ocean-goers can be found at one of the two private beaches, where a beach butler takes care of guests' every whim.

Other outdoor activities include water sports, scuba diving, glass-bottom boat excursions, golf and tennis. The hotel's Red Lane Spa features a beauty salon, separate steam rooms and saunas for men and women, and five treatment rooms, although guests may book many of the services in-suite or on the beach at sunset.

The hotel offers several dining options: the Caribbean's first Caspian Caviar Lounge or C' Bar; the Bayside Restaurant, which boasts casual dining indoors and outside; Le Papillion, serving exotic seafood dishes; Flambe Terrace, offering al fresco dining; and the Royal Cafe, which seats guests on the beach for lunch. In addition, honeymooners may want to book the pier gazebo for a private, candlelit dinner. As for nightly entertainment, the hotel features a jazz trio, a Caribbean steel band and other musical offerings on the piano.

The Royal Plantation offers the three-bedroom private Villa Plantana, as well as seven additional categories of suites within the main hotel. The facilities of the entire resort are at the guests' disposal, although the villa has a private pool. Honeymooners can reserve the 592 square-foot Honeymoon Plantation Oceanfront Suite or the 549 square-foot Honeymoon Grand Luxe Oceanfront Suite.

Round Hill Hotel & Villas: Twenty-five minutes from Montego Bay's Sangster International Airport is the timeless glamour of Round Hill Hotel & Villas. A legend since its opening in 1953, the hotel has hosted luminaries such as John F. Kennedy, Grace Kelly and Demi Moore.

Once a pineapple plantation, the 110-acre property was named one of the "World's Leading Villas" and "the Caribbean's Leading Villa Resort". Guests can stay in either the 36-room Pineapple House Hotel, which received a facelift in September 2005, or one of the 27 individually owned villas or 74 suites that pepper the oblique hillside. Guests have access to five tennis courts, jogging and walking paths, a private beach, an infinity pool, two beach bars, a game room, an art gallery, the Georgian Terrace al fresco restaurant and the kid's club (kids of all ages are welcome at the hotel). Yachts, as well as scuba diving and deep-sea fishing boats, are available for charter.

From the beach, a charming path leads through a rainforest to the Spa at Round Hill, located in a restored, 18th century plantation house set on 10 acres of waterfront lawn, where massages by the sea and afternoon yoga classes take place. At the spa, guests find an indoor/outdoor fitness center, a swimming pool, a beauty salon and eight treatment rooms.

Guests of the oceanfront Pineapple House Hotel stay in 452 square-foot rooms decorated in soothing white hues with mahogany bamboo beds. Surrounded by 30 acres of gardens, the villas offer golf cart shuttle service across the sloping landscape for guests who prefer not to walk back and forth to the beach. The villas start at 1,300 square feet and are decorated individually by each owner.

In addition, the hotel offers a selection of promotions and packages for weddings, honeymoons and spa vacations. Meal plans are available as well.
